Frequently Asked Questions
What is Day-X / SHTF, and why prepare for it?
“Day-X” (also called SHTF) is any event that disrupts normal life — a multi-day power outage, a natural disaster, a supply-chain breakdown, or grid failure. Preparation isn’t about predicting one event; it’s about having water, food, power, communications, and a plan ready before any of them happen. The American Red Cross recommends every household keep an emergency kit and a written plan for exactly this reason.
How much water should I store for an emergency?
The American Red Cross recommends storing at least one gallon of water per person per day, for a minimum of three days for evacuation and two weeks for home use. A family of four should target roughly 56 gallons for a two-week supply. See our water filtration guide for purification options.
How much does it cost to start prepping?
You don’t need thousands of dollars. A disciplined plan of around $50 per month builds a genuine 30-day readiness baseline within a year — food, water, power, and basic medical. Read our step-by-step $50/month prepping guide.
How do you choose which gear to recommend?
Every pick is research-based. We compare manufacturer specifications, independent published testing, certifications, and documented field data side-by-side — then rank by real-world value, not hype. When we reference a measured result, we attribute and link to the source so you can verify it yourself.
