“First… Prepare with Knowledge!”
WHAT IS AN EMP?
An electromagnetic pulse — EMP — can come from two sources. Natural: a massive solar flare, called a Coronal Mass Ejection, sends a wave of charged particles into Earth’s magnetic field. It happened in 1859 — the Carrington Event — and it would have taken down every grid on the planet had electricity existed at scale. Manmade: a nuclear device detonated hundreds of miles above the center of the country releases a burst of gamma radiation that fries unshielded electronics coast to coast — cars, phones, hospital equipment, water pumps, and every transformer on the grid — simultaneously. No warning. No gradual failure. Just… off. Then comes the real challenge: surviving 30+ days without power while maintaining water, food, heat, and comms with nothing but what you prepared in advance.
Your first move is protecting what you have. A Faraday bag for critical electronics and a properly built Faraday cage keep your solar charge controllers, radios, spare ignition modules, and backup power components intact through the pulse. Your second move is building the off-grid power system that runs everything afterward — solar generators, 12V deep-cycle battery banks, and the critical loads that actually matter when the grid never comes back. Prepping for EMP is prepping for permanent grid-down. Every system — water, food, power, comms, medical — has to stand on its own.
Are you prepared for the lights to go out permanently?
