POWER WHEN THE GRID DIES
Solar Power & Battery Systems
Not all solar setups are the same. A folding panel strapped to a Jeep serves a different mission than a rooftop array powering a mountain cabin. We break both down so you buy the right system for your actual scenario.
Warren’s Take
Our EcoFlow has carried us through more than one grid-down night here in the San Antonio area — it’s the piece of equipment I stopped worrying about a long time ago. When a hail storm blew through last summer, the power went out for a while just as we were getting home from a family outing. We ran the fridge, the fans, a CPAP for my dad, and a few kitchen devices, and the panels just kept it all topped off while the neighbors sat in the dark that night.
Why Solar Power Matters
When The Grid Drops, The Lights Stay On
Modern life runs on electricity — refrigeration, comms, medical devices, well pumps, heat. When the grid fails, every other prep clock starts ticking. Solar + battery isn’t a luxury anymore; it’s the foundation everything else stands on.
Food Spoils In 24 Hours
A fridge full of groceries dies inside a day without power. A 1kWh power station + 200W panel keeps it cold indefinitely.
Medical Devices
CPAPs, insulin coolers, oxygen concentrators — for many households, “no power” isn’t inconvenient, it’s life-threatening.
Comms & Information
Phones, radios, laptops, scanners. Information is survival currency — you can’t plan if you can’t charge.
The Big Comparison
Portable vs Mid-Size vs Whole-Home vs Hybrid
Four solar architectures. Four very different budgets and use cases:
| Type | Portable | Mid-Size | Whole-Home | Hybrid + Genset |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 0.3–1 kWh | 1–3 kWh | 10–30 kWh | 30–100+ kWh |
| What It Runs | Phones, lights, CPAP | Fridge, fans, comms | Whole house circuits | Off-grid living |
| Setup Time | 5 minutes | 15 minutes | Days, electrician | Weeks |
| Portable? | โ Carry-on size | โ Wheeled | โ Fixed | โ Fixed |
| Total Cost | $400–$1,000 | $1,500–$4,000 | $15K–$40K | $30K+ |
| SHTF Score | 7 / 10 | 9 / 10 | 10 / 10 | 10 / 10 |
๐ฏ The Verdict
Mid-size is the sweet spot for 90% of preppers.
A 2kWh battery + 400W of panels runs your fridge, charges all comms, powers a CPAP overnight, and recharges in 5 hours of full sun. Costs less than a used pickup. Start here. Add panels and battery later.

Don’t Make These Mistakes
5 Common Solar Mistakes
โ Mistake #1 — Sizing for the panel, not the load
A 200W panel can’t recharge a 2kWh battery in a single cloudy day. Calculate your daily watt-hour load first, then double your panel watts.
โ Mistake #2 — Buying lithium-ion (NMC) instead of LFP
NMC dies in 500–800 cycles and is fire-prone. LFP lasts 3,000+ cycles and is thermally stable. Pay 20% more, get 5x the life.
โ Mistake #3 — Skipping the inverter wattage check
A 1000W inverter won’t start a fridge (3000W surge). Look for inverters rated at 2x the surge of your largest motor load.
โ Mistake #4 — Storing batteries at 100% or 0%
Lithium degrades fastest at the extremes. Long-term storage between 40–60% state of charge extends battery life by years.
โ Mistake #5 — Never running a blackout drill
Cut your main breaker on a Saturday morning. Run the house off your solar setup for 48 hours. You’ll find every weak point fast.
Beyond Solar
What About Gas Generators & Wind?
Two questions everyone asks. Here’s the honest answer on both.
Gas / Propane Generators
Pros: Massive output (5–10kW), cheap up front, works at night and on cloudy days. Best for short-term high-load needs.
Cons: Needs fuel. Gas spoils in 6 months without stabilizer. Propane is better. Loud, smelly, advertises your power. Useless in a months-long event.
Verdict: Great Day-1 to Day-30 bridge. Solar is the long game.
Wind Turbines
Pros: Generates at night and on cloudy days when solar can’t. Great paired with solar in northern latitudes or coastal areas.
Cons: Needs serious wind speeds (12+ mph average) to be worthwhile. Most residential turbines underperform their ratings by 60–80%. Maintenance heavy.
Verdict: Only if you have the site for it. Solar first, always.
๐ฏ The Layered Approach Wins
Propane genset for Days 1–14 (fast power, fuel-storable). Solar + LFP battery for Day 15 onward (renewable, silent, infinite). Wind only if your site fits. Single-source power is a single point of failure.
